Hieroschemamonk Avvakum (Vakarov; 1899-1972)

The elder Avvakum (Vakarov) – a disciple and follower of St Alexis (Kabaliuk) and St Silouan of Athos. He was born in Transcarpathia and lived as an ascetic on Mount Athos in St Panteleimon Monastery from 1926 to 1972. For many years, Elder Avvakum was a member of the monastery’s Council of Elders, served as the monastery steward (oikonómos), and was the representative (antiprósopos) of the monastery at the Holy Community of Mount Athos. It was through his efforts and labours that St Panteleimon Monastery on Mount Athos was preserved from decline and utter ruin.

Oxford University hosts presentation of book about Ukrainian Athonite Avvakum (Vakarov)

June 20, 2023 On 17 June, the University of Oxford hosted a presentation of the English-language book by Ukrainian historian Dr Serhii Shumylo "Elder Avvakum of Mount Athos. The Life of Athonite Hieroschemamonk Avvakum (Vakarov)" - about the Ukrainian Athonite Elder Avvakum (Vakarov), who came from Transcarpathia and was a student of the famous Orthodox saint St Silouan the Athonite.
